Victor
HV-MD2 MUSE Decoder
This auction is for a
RESTORED, JAPAN-MARKET ONLY
Victor HV-MD2 decoder. These MUSE decoders are used for decoding the Japan-only Hi-Vision high definition MUSE LaserDisc format which was only sold in Japan. This late-model, final generation component decoder is known for it's picture quality and small size. In addition, it is one of the only full-functioned HDTV MUSE decoders models to also be able to downconvert to standard SD NTSC! However, like all vintage items, many of these decoders have aged poorly with degraded performance...if they work at all! Fear not with this unit as
it has been
restored
and fully tested
!
The decoder is
FULLY FUNCTIONAL
! All the original, 25-year-old electrolytic
capacitors
(including the surface mount capacitors) have been carefully replaced with the
top-of-the-line high-quality, high-temperature-
tolerant
, extended-life, low-ESR Nichicon
capacitors
as applicable to not only extend the useful lifetime of the unit, but to also reduce losses within the circuitry, reducing generated heat & improving signal
integrity
. It was an expensive, time-consuming, and risky process. If you just spent thousands of US Dollars on a Hi-Vision-capable LaserDisc player (not included),
you don't want the MUSE decoder unit to be an unrepairable, weak part of your chain
due to leaky capacitors and bad/untested components. Don't take my word for it though...
Please see the pictures to see the unit decoding Sony's "The Test Disc" from MUSE LD [not included], outputting in both 1035i HD and downscaled 480i (via composite)!
The decoder is in
EXCELLENT CONDITION
! The unit only shows light scratches on the chassis. Some of these scratches
do cut through the thin top layer of paint
, however. This mostly appears on the left side & top, back edge of the metal chassis cover. There is also a tiny nick thru the paint on the top center edge of the front face plate. There are
very fine
scratches on the two acrylic lenses over some of the front LEDs.
Finally
, there is some minor dust here and there. On the other hand, all (testable) LEDs & buttons light & actuate
without trouble. All lettering is vivid and there is no "smoothing" or signs of excessive use or abuse. In addition, the gold-plated RCA jacks on the back of the unit were lightly polished to insure ease of RCA cable attachment. Overall, the unit is in
extremely presentable condition
and will complement a well-taken-care-of videophile set-up.
Please see the pictures to see the condition of the unit for yourself!
NOTE THAT NO LASERDISC PLAYER, DISCS, OR ADDITIONAL ACCESSORIES ARE INCLUDED
.
If you intend to use this decoder, you'll not only need a Japan-market only Hi-Vision/MUSE-compatible player, but you will also need MUSE/Hi-Vision encoded discs and a short, low-capacitance RCA cable for the MUSE connection between the Hi-Vision player & MUSE decoder. In addition, for best performance, you must ensure your Hi-Vision player's performance is up to spec and your discs do not suffer from "laser rot." Being an essentially analog format, MUSE performance is highly
dependent
upon the environment and condition of the
COMPLETE
signal path from the disc to your eyes. You should also employ a 100V step-down transformer to ensure the longevity of your Japanese devices. I can only
guarantee
the operation of the decoder itself.
